Where I grew up in Africa, monkeys are like raccoons. The best way to catch them is to cut a small hole in the largest pumpkin you can find, hollow out a bit of the inside and replace it with sweet fruit. Leave the pumpkin out and a monkey will force its paw into the hole and grab the fruit. It now can't get its hand back out of the hole, can't move with the weight of the pumpkin, and even threatened with impending death, won't let go its prize.

Is Internet access a human right? A recent UN human rights council report examined the question and concluded that it is - or at least, that limiting or denying access to the internet breaches article 19 of the international covenant on civil and political rights (the right to freedom of expression).

On June 6, 2011, Jim Gilliam gave his stirring "The Internet is My Religion" at the Personal Democracy Forum. In light of recent developments, Gilliam was clearly on to something. Specifically the power of human connectivity and the experience being connected provides. Gilliam shares how the congregation of Internet users gave him the support he needed and a forum in which to mature and grow with an experience more commonly associated with structured faiths. Boldly stating that "humanity connected is God" and then substantiating his claim with the seemingly omnipresent and omnipotent power of the anonymous mass of collaborators, Gilliam's continued life is evidence to the power of the anonymous mass.

Have you noticed the dating commercials on TV this month? It's that time of year that has no direct messaging associated with it, but plays on loneliness and single-hood during the holidays and especially New Year's. As retail stores wrap up their big commercial push, it seems the dating sites swing in behind them along with special events and restaurants reminding us to get out and celebrate. I see similarities between New Years and giving birth - we forget the pain of the previous year and start to prepare for the coming year with gleeful anticipation.

It is the end of 2011. The Zombie Apocalypse is around the corner and everything must get online before the end of the quarter, but before you can revel in designing for the undead, you need to survive the holidays. Time to apply what your industry has taught you.

Picture the following scenario: you're visiting a mall in the last precious days before Christmas. You happen upon a quiet corner, away from the cacophony of clamoring consumers and take a moment to consult your shopping list. It's at that moment that a kindly voice from afar calls to you. You turn to see an unassuming gentleman with a bushy white beard. You get the impression that he's probably a mall Santa on break, but you catch yourself up for being prejudiced and sidle over to him regardless.

With the new year swiftly approaching, it's increasingly challenging to avoid the orgy of 2012 apocalyptic media and programming. And why would you want to? The end of days, once the stoic domain of religious zealots and the paranoid fringe, is now ubiquitous and sexy! The concept and its multitude of permutations litter the airwaves and even channels like Discovery and History have doomsday marathons. Cinema is on a quest to unlock new genres of Armageddon or cash in on tried and true ones. This cultural zeitgeist really leads us to one obvious conclusion: the 2012 zombie apocalypse is almost upon us.

Siri must be making both Google and Microsoft nervous. Aside from being the perfect personal assistant it is how it accomplishes the request. It acts as a first "layer" for users trying to query the internet for information. When you speak to Siri the data gets sent off to Apple's cloud servers, where the speech is processed and then interpreted; a process that, I imagine, involves trying to see if the query is answerable. Search in its most simple form comes after this layer, because as we all know it's often a case of having to scan search results to try to find the data you're looking for.

Recently, I watched a Sesame Street video of kids using computers in 1984. The segment featured drawing programs that took a great deal of effort to produce something that the children could've just as easily sketched with a pencil in a matter of moments, but the concept of "push a button to draw" was pure magic. (I remember being just as fascinated and excited on more primitive machines at an earlier date). The teacher led a celebration of what makes computers different, soliciting answers like "computer's don't have eyes" or "bones" or "can't think." We know these statements to now be untrue.

We were all children once, brought into this world with some base knowledge of how to survive. Through experience and using that base knowledge, we create empirical data that helps us learn and make better decisions. This is what Machine Learning refers to: the process in which computers evolve their behaviours based on empirical data and some sort of base knowledge.

The iPhone 4 was used to film scenes in The Avengers, a highly anticipated blockbuster--wait, that was all misquoted? The iPhone 4 was only used for boring, phone-like things like placing calls? In the wake of consumer cynicism and sympathy towards Apple in response to both the release of the iPhone 4S and Jobs' passing, you would think Apple would latch onto some positive publicity. In this case, it was a very good thing that they did not.

Last week I made a last minute decision to buy a scalped ticket to see the Black Keys (because I've heard a lot of buzz about them) and it was probably one of the best moments in my musical experience thus far. I realized the show was sold out long ago and scalpers were offering insane prices. Not knowing where to get a ticket or who to go with for that matter I turned to my social networks - posting a "status update" on Facebook and BlackBerry Messenger. Within minutes I had friends offering tickets they couldn't hold and another multitude of people going to the show - an unprecedented form of communal feedback.

Everyone loves an underdog. It's human nature. Regardless of the industry, society has an insatiable thirst for the retelling of David vs. Goliath. In the social networking world however, there's indeed a battle going where two entities are vying for the title of biggest and best. The problem is, David is Google, and Google ain't no underdog.

Given that my first computer experience was loading programs via audio tape cassettes on a Commodore PET, I've marvelled (or suffered) through more than 30 years of operating system improvements. To help frame this context, I've been primarily using Macs since the Apple IIc in all it's 1984-orange-on-black-display glory. So why write an article about the Microsoft's new OS, especially given that the last time I enjoyed using one was when I had an XT? (And yes, it had a "turbo" button). It's because Windows 8 has really caught my attention.

Apple hopes the announcement of iCloud will change how Mac users store their information. In the case of music lovers, consumers can expect the iCloud to drastically change the way we store and listen to music. The service will make all of the music you have on one device available to be heard on all of your devices. So, for example, your iPhone music purchase will automatically be pushed to your computer, your iPad, and so on.

There's a new wave in the online advertising community. It goes by several names - Web 3.0, semantic targeting, and semantic advertising being a couple of the more popular ones. The inspiration behind semantic targeting is pretty simple - it's another Google AdSense, just one that happens to be better targeted than its predecessors. Semantic targeting is pretty self explanatory - ads are placed according to the meaning of an entire web page as opposed to being placed according to specific matching keywords.

Psychology is used on us every day whether we are perceptive enough to realize it or not. It is why we chose the cleanser in the blue bottle instead of the brown; why we noticed the small button in the top left corner before we realized there is a larger one in the middle of the page; and the reason why a bikini clad model makes men impatient and should not be used in life-insurance advertisements (no instant gratification). Contextualizing psychological triggers within a webpage directing or guiding visitors to a certain destination or end result has long become a discipline in design. How often do you visit a website, stick around for longer than thirty seconds and end up with a dozen items in your shopping cart?

The recent launch of the Blackberry Playbook is being called an awesome fail. Tech critiques and consumers seem at awe trying to figure out why RIM has designed their tablet in the manor that they did. Electgronista writes: "The lack of software could be an obstacle for the tablet as it would limit its appeal mostly to existing BlackBerry owners rather than those using competing phones. RIM has repeatedly said that the PlayBook is meant as a "professional-grade" tablet and that the bridging keeps the tight security intact, but it has also pitched the design as friendly for gaming and video, entering it into an environment where BlackBerry use is on the decline."

Having both family and friends in Japan, I've been following the coverage of that nation's trials/agonies in the wake of the earthquake(s), tsunami, and level 7 nuclear accident. News has been wiped off the airwaves almost as completely as the coastal towns in the affected prefectures. Occasionally there are the aftershocks of coverage, but these tend to be increasingly rare blips on a macro level that beg questions and offer no substantive answers. I found myself turning even deeper online for the details that the mainstream news services won't provide.

The most complex supercomputer in the known universe is right behind your eyes. It is free and it is available to you now. Awesome. Now use it to consider the following: You delegate a massive number of complex tasks to the disgusting, little computation machine in our skull. Yet our collective understanding of its inner clockwork is so fragmented and shallow that when it comes to interfacing with it, only a microscopic shadow of the data makes the journey from brain to computer. Not so awesome.

Our environment today is highly saturated with augmented reality. These additions to the real world are there to make communication easier, information more accessible, and always to entertain us. The juggernaut of this trend, the smart device, is relatively new in the grand scheme of things, and the number of ways to augment reality is growing exponentially every day. In this environment anyone may feel overwhelmed by the abundance and struggle to edit the experience. Will this period of excess pass to be replaced by simplicity and mentality of less is more?

On April 3rd, 2010, Apple released a new line of tablet computer known as the iPad. While the concept of the tablet existed way before Apple entered the market, the introduction of the iPad has arguably sparked a fire under the competition: once again, as with the iPhone and the iPod before it, Apple has taken a product that existed, refined it, reduced it to it's most basic elements, and achieved wild success.

In terms of money spent, few days this year will rival Valentine's. Experts say roughly $16 billion will have changed hands by day's end in the US alone... Not surprising when you learn that more then half American women will break up with their boyfriends if they show up empty handed tonight (there's still time boys). So, how does your company get in on the action, assuming you're not in the jewellery, perfume, or lingerie business? Glad you asked.

With Valentine's Day upon us, I find myself being bombarded with advertisements of love and how best to express this love. Even while attempting to retreat to my guilty pleasure, the massively popular MMORPG World of Worcraft (WoW), the digital world has been gift wrapped in Valentine's Day-themed paper. In every in-game city people are sharing their love with 'love charm kits', putting pretty pink hearts over their avatars...you can even shoot 'love rockets' into the sky in celebration.

Many cultures around the world celebrate the idea of gift-giving -- a mass exchange of gifts to commemorate a holiday, a harvest, a birth, or a feeling. In our hyper-marketed and advertised society, gift giving cannot escape the demand for unique and individual distinction. Every gift by default must be both personal and novel to avoid being pegged as a re-gift or even worse a return. With Valentines Day around the corner I am very familiar with these unnatural pressures of giving a gift that simply delights from the bottom of my heart. The homogenized facade of red hearts and roses, overused and boring cultural icons for love, do little to generate that positive and genuine expression of giving a gift that makes someone happy.

Sometimes, my mouth works faster then my sense of self-sensor, and the truth - my wife may have a differing opinion on this - comes flying out for all to hear. For those who have just returned from a safari on the moon, Microsoft's Kinect (or Project Natal as it was known during development) is a peripheral for the Xbox 360 that has been gathering quite a bit of attention. For myself however, the real interest is not in the (entertaining but somewhat lackluster) launch games or the official implementation, but in the independent projects of hacker-developers who have effectively extended the device beyond unconventional gaming controller into something much more compelling.

I am by no means a philosophical guy, but that said, it isn't all that rare to find me questioning one of life's accepted truths... If only for a little while anyway. Case in point, for as long as I can remember I have wondered if there was an exception to Newton's "What goes up, must come down". Today, unless someone can prove otherwise, I have that answer - data, specifically User Generated Content.

We all know that art is inspired by anything and everything; an emotion, a moment in time, a fill-in-the-blank. Could the same be said about technology?

Innovation, the act of creating something new and different, is one of those rare words that has transcended the sum of its parts. Introduce something new, anything, and you are all of a sudden being an innovative company? To my mind, and in a word, NO.

When I attended the "A Call To Action" themed TEDx Toronto a couple of weeks ago, an excellent/engaging speaker, Sol Guy, posited the concept that Coca-Cola could deliver medicines to the Third World. A little digging after the conference showed that there was already such an initiative in play ("Aidpods" formed to fit in the negative space of crates of bottles), but the fundamental question lingered: what opportunities exist to facilitate a mutual value proposition for partnerships between the corporate and non-profit sectors?

Stayfree has taken a page out of The Man Your Man Could Smell Like's book and produced a suite of YouTube commercials - Dates With Brad/Trevor/Ryan - that try to mimic Old Spice's fantastic viral marketing success. The setup is a series of dates shot from a voyeuristic POV that show an idealized man - complete with disappearing shirt, making toys for Third World youth, laundry loving, vacuuming obsessed, piano playing, and talking inclusively of mothers. These are pseudo-idealized men who despise "moisture" and demonstrate the effectiveness of Stayfree vs. major competitors. This may be a brave foray for Stayfree into viral/social, but it's not without serious issues.

Without getting into too much detail, we have recently been approached by a US broadcaster to discuss the possibility of creating an online fantasy sports league. A great opportunity that would not only allow our team to flex their creative and development muscles, but one that would be a dream project for me. They are looking to build brand awareness, increase their audience, and of course, make money. So, how does this broadcaster intend on making money through a fantasy league? Two potential paths quickly come to mind, as well as a third not so obvious opportunity that may just be worth exploring.

The first step in developing a successful product is correctly matching product attributes with consumer needs. If there is a solid match, the authenticity of the product's corresponding "brand" and its communication strategy can be determined by how efficiently it bridges the gap between the target's needs and the product. This so-called "Truth in Advertising" is the gold standard in developing brands and consumer's loyalty towards them. Recently, however, consumer trust in corporations has taken a nose dive and people are starting to focus less on 'Authenticity of Brand' and more on 'Authenticity of Corporation'.

Nor is Pepsi, whose "Oh Africa" has been racking up millions of views on the web since May. SapientNitro and Unilever put together an ingenious vending machine system that rewards people for smiling with ice cream through a very clever blend of technologies. (And yes, it integrates with social platforms). RosettaStone's "technology enhanced memorial products" allow people to create wireless tablets to complement headstones with narrative information on the deceased, broadcasting information for an estimated 3,200 years (via NCF-RFID wireless chips to mobile/online). These are just two examples of a strengthening trend: lateral digital convergence.

The digital landscape has for a long time lived in two dimensions - on the computer screen - but within the past couple of years the industry has started embracing the 3rd dimension in an effort to bring the digital experience into the "real world". Large scale "holograms" have been popping up at shopping malls and auto shows across the world. Many of these so-called 3D experiences, however, are actually 2D graphics in disguise.

If you're like me, pornography isn't a part of your life. Sure, you've seen it, perhaps you've enjoyed it, but for the most part, you'd much rather be having sex than watching it. That said, like it or hate it, you have to give the porn industry credit when it comes to technological innovation. VHS, instant cameras, pay-per-view, streaming video content and credit-card verification sites - they may not have created these technologies or services, but they sure played an instrumental role in establishing them all as permanent fixtures within our daily lives.

To be efficient through mass media, marketers demand the 'Big Idea' communication strategy to engage a broad mass market audience. A common result of this is a mass media campaign that reaches many but engages few. Enter social media, mobile technologies and crowd-sourcing. By using these modern tactics, marketers have the opportunity to custom tailor targeted communications to small, even fringe, consumer groups, without alienating their core consumer, and all within an efficient budget.

"So what happened to my spend?" would've been the question on the lips of brand managers in the 90s during the dot com explosion, had they the savvy of today. Those few with sense to demand oversight on the line items in digital proposals would've noticed that projects with ambition suffered multiple build cycles for IE and Netscape 2/3 as well as extended QA and deployment time windows. Then a novel idea surfaced - standards... Write once, write well, and deploy cross-platform, cross-browser.

Augmented Reality (AR) is created when the physical world is enhanced, or augmented, by virtual computer-generated imagery. The computer recognizes symbols and renders out a digital image based on the position of the symbols, normally in real-time. For instance, you can hold up a piece of paper to your webcam and Toyota will show you the piece of paper on your computer screen with a 3D rendering of their new iQ car driving on it. Change the angle of the paper and you will change the angle and behaviour of the car.

An article from Advertising Age suggested that advertisers are beginning to prefer longer commercials. These videos are also known as short films or long form ads. Advertisers are looking at short films as a way to engage consumers for longer then 30 seconds. "One way to do this is through short films and fun pieces that create awareness of the brand, and reward consumers" (Advertising Age). In addition to engaging consumers, advertisers are trying to cut through other medias as well as cut costs.

Ever since I installed a barcode scanner app on my phone, I have seen QR (Quick Response) codes everywhere so naturally I wanted one of my own. A QR code is a square barcode that, when scanned with your smart phone's camera, automatically links you to URLs, location coordinates, text, contact information or any online content. With a barcode scanner app installed, you just point your phone's camera at the code to read its contents.

The human body is an amazing machine. One of the most amazing things about our bodies is that we learn through a feedback loop that records and processes experiences and then reports information. It's from examining that process that frog VP of Creative, Robert Fabricant, developed the concept of Augmented Mindfulness.

The overview of experiments - spanning motion capture, phonaesthetics, and even surprised robots - illuminate that the level of interaction within the digital spectrum is near boundless. Mr. Levin provides a strong case of if you can imagine it, it can be done. So what does this mean for advertising and brand engagement?

As an interactive marketing agency in Toronto we talk, email, IM, LinkedIn, text, Facebook, program, design, wiki, play and breath all things digital. Everyday people send studio-wide emails of compelling things that we've seen, read, or researched that start torrents of replies and lively debates. Some, admittedly, should never see the light of day, but others really deserve to be shared with a wider audience.

The goal of this newsletter is to strip out the sketchy subject matter, colorful language, and capture some of the more insightful ideas and concepts, offering straight-forward points of view and share them with our friends. We hope you find value and feel more informed by the information. If you do not wish to receive our Solo Speaks newsletter, please feel free to unsubscribe at the bottom of the email - promise we won't hold it against you.

And by the way, we've just been nominated as a finalist for FITC's Best Canadian Studio Website category for 2010. The awards will be given out on the 26th of April - we'll be sure to let you know how it plays out... especially if we win!

Chatroulette is a relatively new social channel that allows users to be instantly connected anonymously and randomly to other users using their webcam. If you don't like what you see simply hit "Next" and be automatically connected to the next random user.

More companies are realizing these days that they can use their power in the marketplace to aim for goals bigger than simply the bottom-line. That may be because more consumers are opting to choose products and services based on the brand's charitable leanings. It's an easy way for consumers to help others while doing what they normally do.

Smart phones are opening up revolutionary new opportunities for marketers. These new innovations are due to the personal information which is now accessible: (1) Location and (2) Identity, which can be as simple as "name" and as deep as their preferences pertaining to specific goods and services. The implications are immense and digital agencies are just starting to scratch the surface.
